Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sönmez plays in Wimbledon fort she first time. She goes to the third round.This is a first for Türkiye.
In Wimbledon the quarter final comes after the fourth round.
Zeynep is 23 years old. In November 2024 she won a tournament in Mexico. She brought her second WTA cup to Türkiye.
“THE HARD PART OF TENNİS İS NEVER BEİNG AT HOME”
Zeynep Sönmez’s family is from Artvin. She was born in İstanbul on 30 April 2002.
She met tennis when she was six or seven years old at a summer school. Her family sent her there.
She told;”My family sent met o summer school. Idid basketball and swimming. But ı didnt like basketball . I ran away and played tennis with big rackets.”
At the summer school a coach saw her talent.
Then her journey to become a national athlete started.
Zeynep Sönmez is 23 years old. Her day starts at 7 in the morning. She trains at least two times a day.
She says “ı try to spend time on mental training just like physical training.”
In her Wimbledon match people saw her looking at a notebook.
“ın my notebook ı write tactics. Sometimes ı read it when ım angry or not playing well . ıt helps me a lot on the court.”
She has no special lucky ite mor ritual. Before matches she prepares by thinking about the matches –singers like Sezen Aksu Tarkan Yalın Kenan Doğulu.
WTA matches are different countries. So Zeynep travels all the time.
She says:”The hard part is always being away from home and family. On my birthday this year ı bought myself a small cake and video called my family. I was in tournament.

Zeynep Sönmez is not the first Turkish woman o have success in tennis.
National player İpek Şenoğlu was the first Turkish woman to play Wimbledon.
In 2016 Çağla Büyükakçay won the İstanbul Cup.
She was the first Turkish player to win a WTA singles title.
