The South Korean parliament has decided to change the martial law rules. Now askey or the police will not be able to enter the National Assembly without the permission of the Speaker of the Parliament. It was also forbidden to block the entrance of deputies to the parliament.
This decision follows the short-term martial law declared by former President Yoon Suk Yeol in December 2024. That night, soldiers lined up in front of the parliament, and lawmakers had to get over the walls to get in.
Yoon said that he declared martial law to protect the country from ‘anti-state’ forces, but he could not provide concrete evidence to support this claim. This incident caused a major political crisis in South Korea. Yoon was dismissed from office and is being tried on charges of rebellion. Many senior officials in his administration have also been arrested.
The snap elections held in June were won by Lee Jae Myung of the opposition. At a press conference describing his first 30 days in office, new President Lee said that they want to establish better relations with North Korea. This is a different approach from the harsh attitude of his predecessor Yoon.
But South Korean politics is still quite divided.Although Lee’s candidate for prime minister was approved in parliament, Yoon’s party boycotted the vote.
