Founder of the Platform “Forests Are Our Breath, Fires Are Our Killers” Republican Woman Mustafa Kemal Askeri Gülper Yılmaz made an important statement regarding the forest fire in Çanakkale and other fires in our country. In her statement, Yılmaz said:
“CAN YOU HEAR MY VOICE
WAKE UP FROM YOUR SLUMBER, O
TURKISH NATION, WAKE UP BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.
We are burning—does anyone hear us? The living beings within us are burning—are you aware of this? Your life plans are coming to an end, your oxygen sources are running out. Everything related to life is leaving old traces, and your future is disappearing. Now I ask you: Why aren’t you speaking up as a nation? Why are you silent about everything? Why are you standing still as if your hands and feet are tied? Who is stopping you? Does your future and your children not concern you at all? Why are you so silent? Whom or what are you afraid of?”
You are the descendants of those who said, “Çanakkale cannot be crossed.” You are the descendants of conquerors. What happened to the past of those who died without blinking an eye when Mustafa Kemal’s soldiers told you, “I order you to die”? Why are you silent and putting up with all kinds of oppression? When will you rise up? When will you start fighting for your future? When will the day of reckoning come? Will you only come to your senses when the country is completely occupied and you are driven out of here? When will you become a compassionate society?
Please, say “Stop” to the climate law. Today the forests are disappearing, tomorrow the animals, and eventually the farmlands. We will be driven into starvation. We could end up in a situation worse than what you are witnessing in Palestine right now. Here, the war is not being fought with weapons, but with your silence. Do not remain silent, please do not remain silent! Speak up as loudly as you can and stand up—I urge you to do so before it is too late.
