Turkish wheelchair tennis player Ahmet Kaplan reached the semi-final in the quad category at Wimbledon.

In the quarter-final, Kaplan played against British player Andy Lapthorne.

Kaplan won the match with scores of 6-2, 1-6, and 6-2.

Ahmet Kaplan is 23 years old and ranked number 4 in the world.

Today, he will play against world number 1 Niels Vink from the Netherlands in the semi-final.

Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. It takes place in London, the capital of England.

Another Turkish player, Zeynep Sönmez, also made history at Wimbledon.

She reached the third round in the women’s singles category.

This is the best result for a Turkish player in a Grand Slam main draw.

Zeynep Sönmez is also 23 years old. This is her first time playing in the Wimbledon main draw.

In the third round, she lost to world number 17, Ekaterina Alexandrova, 6-3 and 7-6.

Sönmez is ranked 88th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world ranking.

She won her first WTA singles title in November 2024 in Mexico, at the Mérida Open.

This was also the second WTA singles title for Turkey.

In January 2025, she lost in the final round of the Australian Open qualifiers.

In May, she played in the French Open (Roland Garros) but lost in the first round to Elina Svitolina with scores of 1-6 and 1-6.

Zeynep Sönmez said:

“When I lifted the trophy, I felt happy about what I achieved and emotional about what I gave up.”

The Wimbledon women’s final will be played on Saturday, July 12.

The men’s final will be played on Sunday, July 13.

In the women’s final, Amanda Anisimova (USA) will play against Iga Swiatek (Poland).

In the men’s final, the winners of the Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz vs. Taylor Fritz matches will play each other.

The total prize money is 53.5 million pounds (about 3 billion Turkish lira).

The singles champions will each win 3 million pounds (about 163 million Turkish lira).
