Minister of Education Yusuf Tekin said they are watching the discussions about shortening compulsory education.
He said, “If the public wants this, we will talk about it with the right departments.”
His words came after a study by Eğitim-Bir-Sen, a teacher union under Memur-Sen.
Ali Yalçın, the president of the union, said that their research shows the last 4 years of the 4+4+4 education system should be reviewed.
Ali Yalçın, who is also the president of Memur-Sen, said in a press statement on July 8:
“I want to say that we need to talk about the last 4 years of the education system.
We should see the problems and discuss them with people and groups in society.”
In the study by Eğitim-Bir-Sen, more than 36,000 people joined.
They were teachers, school managers, high school students, and parents.
According to Yalçın, more than 93% of the teachers and managers said that the last 4 years of the system should change.
Many people said that the last 4 years should be changed like this:
2+2 (2 years must, 2 years optional)
or 3+1 (3 years must, 1 year optional)
Yalçın said:
“That’s why we think the Ministry of Education, experts, and all groups should talk about this again.
But in the end, the final decision will be made by the Ministry of Education and the 21st National Education Council.”
